Appendix C — Changelog

Editions are numbered by year and month, so 2026.10 is the October 2026 edition. Earlier versions of the book weren’t numbered; their history is in the repository’s commit log.

C.1 2026.10 — 28 October 2026

The first numbered edition. It comes from running the book’s examples in Windows PowerShell 5.1, Git Bash, R and Docker, and fixing the ones that failed or did something other than what the text said.

  • Windows. PowerShell equivalents for the command-line basics, including a warning that PowerShell’s rmdir deletes a non-empty folder if you accept its default answer; the uv installer command that runs under Windows’ default script policy; Git Bash activation lines; Docker volume mounts for each shell; and how to install make.
  • Environments. uv and conda commands in place of bare pip install lines, a new section on uv’s lockfile, and corrected descriptions of what conda env export --from-history and renv::snapshot() record.
  • Examples. The GitHub Pages walkthrough, the Makefile, the DVC sequence, the Flask and Chart.js example, the ggplotly() conversion, the sample R Markdown document, parameterised Jupyter reports and several Dockerfiles now work as written. The Makefile also skips steps that are already done, and keeps its tabs when copied from this site.
  • Platforms. AWS App Runner, which closed to new customers; Quarto Pub, which Posit Connect Cloud is replacing; shinyapps.io’s migration dates; PyCharm, which absorbed its Community Edition; TorchServe, now archived; S3’s default encryption; and deprecated Streamlit and Dash calls.
  • Security. The example containers run as an unprivileged user, the .dockerignore excludes .env, and passwords are typed at a prompt rather than into commands.
  • References. Newer editions, corrected authors and moved links.
